<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">It was my turn to host this month's bookclub. I decided on quiche and salad for lunch on a sunny saturday afternoon. It was a great turnout with only two bookclubbers missing due to family occasions. We enjoyed a lovely afternoon catching up. The book up for discussion was 'How We Met' by Katy Regan. It was generally thought to be predictable and an average read. K brought some lovely cupcakes from Avoca as we missed Adrienne’s fairy buns. Our miniest bookclubber was in flying form after this particular sugar hit! Lisa also shared her good news with us that another bookclub baby is due in October.

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">We decided to go with Debs suggestion of reading a classic book and Amers suggested ‘The Great Gatsby’ as the movie remake is due out soon.

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">The Great Gatsby is a novel by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald. The story takes place in 1922, during the Roaring Twenties, a time of prosperity in the United States after World War I. All the bright young things go to Jay Gatsby's Long Island parties. Yet Gatsby himself is reserved and mysterious. He seems always to be waiting for something or someone. When he finally draws the beautiful Daisy Buchanan back into his orbit, he sets in motion a series of tragedies. And F. Scott Fitzgerald gives us what many consider to be the greatest American novel - a crystalline portrait of a society captivated by status and ambition, and a man doomed in love.
Taken from: <span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">Google Books

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">From the uniquely imaginative mind of writer/producer/director Baz Luhrmann comes the new big screen adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby. In his adaptation, the filmmaker combines his distinctive visual, sonic, and storytelling styles in three dimensions, weaving a Jazz Age cocktail faithful to Fitzgerald's text and relevant to now. Leonardo DiCaprio stars in the title role. Judging from his last movie Moulin Rouge, we are in for a treat. Amers is going to host the next bookclub and perhaps we may even have a bookclub movie outing too.
We were supposed to meet in February but the date was rescheduled as baby Adam was poorly. The book under discussion was ‘How to Talk to a Widower’ by Jonathan Tropper. All agreed it was a good read and it looks like our new year’s resolution is holding fast as most of us had read the book. Long may that last! I especially liked the part about the bunnies.
Lots of good news since 2012 with new houses, new jobs and new babies on the way, 2013 is already looking busy and getting off to a good start for some. Shinners had a lovely spread of homemade sausage rolls, salads and had been baking up a storm including a Swedish apple cake and a carrot cake. We all asked for the recipes. And of course Adrienne brought her by now infamous and obligatory fairy buns. We had a lovely afternoon of lovely food, company and conversation. It was a small get together as Amers had jetted off to Madrid, Li was sick, Debs dropped by for a short visit and being between e-mails and changing jobs poor K was out of the loop and had missed the rescheduled date.

So the next book is, Debs suggestion, How We Met by Katy Regan.

Summary: A contemporary story of love, friendship and grief, told with Katy's inimitable laugh-out-loud humour, poignancy and heart.
There are some people you can’t imagine life without.
Liv Jenkins had been meticulously planning her ultimate to-do list – from the outrageous to sensible – of everything she longed to do before her dreaded thirtieth birthday, but when tragedy struck she never got the chance…
Two years later, Liv’s five closest friends have come together on the anniversary of her death and have made a pact: they will complete Liv’s to-do list in tribute to her memory.
Over the next year, before what would’ve been Liv’s thirtieth birthday, her friends set out to complete the tasks. But along the way deeply buried secrets, silent guilt, unrequited love and years of lies, rise to the surface rocking their friendships.
When they reach the end of Liv’s list the final task shakes the group to their core and they realise that they must face their futures and the consequences of their pasts, and with Liv’s help, live the lives they have always dreamed of.
Summary:
This brooding historical fiction chronicles the mayhem aboard the Star of the Sea, a leaky old sailing ship crossing from Ireland to New York during the bitter winter of 1847, its steerage crammed to the bulkheads with diseased and starving refugees from the Irish potato famine. Amongst the passengers are a maidservant
with a devastating secret, bankrupt Lord Merridith and his family, an
aspiring novelist and a maker of revolutionary ballads. All in search of
a new home in the Promised land, each is yet connected more deeply than
they can possibly know... and a camouflaged killer is stalking the
decks, hungry for vengeance and absolution. The novel takes the form of a personal account written by passenger G. Grantley Dixon, a New York Times reporter who intersperses his narrative with reportage and interviews as he describes the intrigue that unfolds during the 26-day journey.
This year’s Christmas bookclub was held on Friday 28th December in Brasserie 66. It was a lovely ending to a fabulous book-filled year full of Christmas cheer and high jinks. The book this time was The Cutting Season by Attica Locke. Those who had read the book found it slow-moving. We all went for their delightful Christmas menu which was good value at 33 for a starter, main course and dessert. The food was delicious and they offered a choice of either dessert or a Christmas cocktail. Many of us partook of the cocktail. Debs gave us all a lovely gift of homemade face cream made from meadowsweet she collected on our bookclub away trip in the summer. We also had the first bookclub awards where everyone received an award certificate and we each made a speech. All awards were courtesy of Billy Bear and the following were presented:

Val received the Good Conduct Award. She would also have won best attendance if she had bothered to show up – only kidding we know she was ill! I got the doctors cert to prove it!

Adrienne was presented with the Teddy Bear Award. Also if there was an award for best buns, Adrienne would have also won this as her fairy cakes are legendary. She is also our newest member.

Trish received the Computer Whizz Award for keeping the blog going single-handedly, not that anyone reads it! Ironically as most people know I am also the technophobe amongst us but am still surpassing Debs on this score, just about as she is catching up fast!

Amers was presented with the Outstanding Reader Award. She is our little bookclub swot, every bookclub needs one!

Shinners won the Helping Hands Award. She is also our newest mammy and one of our founding members.

Debs received the Happy Face Award. She was also contender of best storyteller – can anyone forget her been stung by a swarm of bees story?

Ciara got the Shining Star Award. She is also our best/only overseas/international member

Lisa was presented with the Playing Well with Others Award. She is also a fellow technophobe!

Kathryn received the Bright Idea Award. I was running out of ideas/valid categories at this point! Although she could also have won best attendance or best organiser if Billy Bears had some foresight.

Everyone also wins Hostess with the Mostess awards – there wasn’t enough to go around!

So onto another year, 2013 beckons and the next book up for discussion is How to Talk to a Widower by Jonathan Tropper:

Summary:
A portrait of a modern guy in crisis, Tropper's third novel (Everything Changes; The Book of Joe) follows Doug Parker, whose life is frozen into place at 29 when Hailey, his wife of two years, is killed in a plane crash. Unable to leave the tony suburban house they once shared, he spends his days reliving their brief marriage from the moment he found her sobbing in his office over troubles with her first husband. At the same time, Doug's magazine column about grieving for his wife has made him irresistible to the media (book deals, television spots and the like are proffered) and to a wide array of women who find him "slim, sad and beautiful." Though stepson Russ is getting in trouble at school and Doug's pregnant twin sister, Claire, moves in, no amount of crying to strippers can keep Doug from the temptations of his best friend's wife or Russ's guidance counselor. Alternately flippant and sad, Tropper's book is a smart comedy of inappropriate behavior at an inopportune time.

The next bookclub date for your diaries will be Chez Harmo on Saturday 9th Feb for lunch (anytime time after 2pm) and maybe even some book chat.....depends on how good we've been adhering to our resolution to actually read the books this year.

Happy Reading and Happy New Year Bookclubbers!
Bord Gais Energy Bookclub have chosen our little bookclub as their bookclub of the month:

The Full Moon Book Club was set up in 2005 and the name was chose to signify the monthly meetings that they have. Each member of the book club takes a turn to host and organise the book club monthly meeting.

Membership numbers has fluctuated from between 6 – 10 members and since 2005 they have lost some members and gained new members. Through the years the monthly meetings have overseen many changes in the lives of the women who come. Some have gotten married, some have had children and some have moved away.

The Full Moon Book Club mostly read fictional books. Book choices are submitted by each of the members to the book club and then it goes to a vote where the majority rules. Books can sometimes be chosen because they were recommended by other book clubs for example Richard and Judy, Oprah or the Bord Gáis Energy Online Book Club.

If a book is on the bestseller lists or books that have won awards like the Man Booker Prize or the Irish Book Awards this may be a reason for the book club members to choose a book. Generally the book club choose a book because it resonates with a member of the club. This gives all the book club members the chance to read genres that they would otherwise not engage in. A few of their more memorable book choice have been their first read ‘The Red Tent’ by Anita Diamante and more recently ‘The Language of Flowers’ by Vanessa Diffenbaugh and ‘The Help’ by Kathryn Stockett.

When it comes to interests and hobbies the book club members are as diverse as the books they have chosen to read, an eclectic mix of ladies who have been instrumental in keeping the book club going. Some of them love to dance, some to run, others love to garden and grow herbs. Some of them have a passion for cooking, some love to travel, some of to knit, others love music…it is this diverse mix of members who share so many communal and individual interests that keep their monthly meetings interesting, informative and most of all fun.

In the early days of the book club there were reading guides and questions and in-depth discussions whereas nowadays they have a much more relaxed chat about the book. The members also started a blog in 2006 for those who couldn’t make book club. Over the last few years, they have enjoyed themed meetings like their annual Mulled Wine Christmas Book club, Summer Garden Party, Book club goes to the Movies, Afternoon Tea as well as a few excursions to the Theatre and the Cinema.

The essence of the Full Moon book club is simple- ‘to share’, whether it’s the words of a story, the latest good holiday read, a life changing novel or just a simple page turning thriller. It is not so much a club as a gathering of friends who come together to share food, laughter, gossip, and most importantly share their opinions on books and how they play a part in each of the members lives. Through book club the members have become close friends and book club meetings now are as much about friendship as they are about the books.trishphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17156492240090282246noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27468280.post-88728017675555268792012-09-28T15:24:00.001+01:002012-09-28T15:24:24.578+01:002012 UpdateTo bring you up to date, 2012 has been a busy year for our little bookclub.

We started 2012 with a January bookclub to overcome those post-Christmas blues in Balbriggan hosted by Anne Marie. We had a very tasty lunch and the nicest chocolate pie. The book we discussed that meeting was The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. We all enjoyed the book and loved the circus setting but the ending was a bit of a let down.

Our next meeting was on April 28th hosted by Kathryn in her new house in Goatstown. A lovely sunny day, Kathryn treated us to burritos. Our book for that meeting was One Moment, One Morning by Sarah Rayner. We all agreed the book was a little depressing.

The next time we met was on May 26th hosted by Vally in Ashtown. We had a new member join us, Adrienne, always nice to have someone new in the group as it livens things up a little. We also had a mini bookclubber join us, Ella Rose and we did our first bookclub photo shoot. Another lovely sunny day but unfortunately trying to organize eight women and get them all looking at the camera proved challenging!

They do bring your own wine on a Wednesday of which we took advantage. There was at least a bottle of wine per person! Cue much laughter and the next day many a sore head but what fun we had! The book up for discussion for that meeting was Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James. I pitied our poor waiter and our fellow diners especially those on dates! We all agreed that we started off with Fifty loving it and ended up feeling fed up and annoyed. Neither of the characters are particularly likeable and after a while, the writing started to grate and the sex scenes got boring! Only a few of us ended up reading book two and even fewer finished the trilogy.

Kilkenny. They host a Festival of Books in September but we choose the summer season and August 11th was the chosen date. We had so much fun – we rented bikes and cycled to St. Mullin’s; stayed in the Waterside and spent the next day in Inistioge. Read all about it by on Girl From The Hills blog.

Our new member, Adrienne, hosted the next meeting and decided to have a movie night inspired by our bookclub away and so the ‘circle of friends’ evening was held on the 21st September in Raheny. We never did get round to watching the movie – too much to talk about! Adrienne cooked chicken curry and beautiful fairy buns. Her cooking and baking skills mean she is now a lifelong member! The book was Prisoner of Heaven by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, author of a previous book we all enjoyed - Shadow of the Wind. All those who read the book agreed it was a great read. Our book for the next meeting due to be held in November is Ellis Island by Kate Kerrigan.

The Largest Book Give-Away Ever Attempted!

The inaugural World Book Night will take place on Saturday, 5 March 2011, two days after World Book Day! It is intended to celebrate books and encourage reading. A growing list of high-profile figures from publishing, media and the arts are lending their support to this ambitious initiative by becoming Patrons of World Book Night including Damon Albarn, Dave Eggers, Colin Firth, David Gilmour, Antony Gormley, Seamus Heaney, Damien Hirst, Nigella Lawson, Mary Portas, J.K. Rowling and Tilda Swinton.

Jamie Byng, Chairman, World Book Night says: “World Book Night is a unique collaboration between publishers, booksellers, libraries, writers and individual members of the public and one that I think is going to have an enormously positive impact on books and reading. There are few things more meaningful than the personal recommendation and having one million books given to one million different people on one night in this way is both unprecedented and hugely exciting.”

With the full support of the Publishers Association, the Booksellers Association, the Independent Publishers Guild, the Reading Agency with libraries, World Book Day and the BBC, one million books will be given away by an army of 20,000 passionate readers to members of the public across the UK and Ireland! And I am one of the lucky givers, the book I will be distributing is Case Histories by Kate Atkinson. I have decided to offer the first five to my blog readers so if you want a free book, send me your details by e-mail and I will post out the book to the lucky few. The rest will be distributed locally or I will be broke!

To get involved, you can check out their Facebook page.

World Book Night will take place on Saturday 5 March 2011 and will be broadcast in partnership with BBC Two.

A Million Books for Free: A Culture Show Special, BBC2 Saturday @ 7.30pm

Presented by Andrew Graham-Dixon, this half-hour film tells the story of World Book Night. The film follows the preparations for the night, as a million books are printed and distributed to 20,000 givers, who have volunteered to hand out 48 copies of their favourite book, which features on World Book Night's list of selected titles. With 25 different books on the special list, there is something for everyone to enjoy, from Nigel Slater's Toast and Seamus Heaney's New Selected Poems to The Spy Who Came In From the Cold by John le Carre. World Book Night is about sharing, through word of mouth, the pleasure of reading. In the film, famous and non-famous readers talk about the books they really love.

And for those lucky enough to live in London - there is a ticketed event in Trafalgar Square the night before hosted by Graham Norton. This event will be covered on BBC2, at which appearing on the night will be a great line up of well-known authors, actors and musicians who will be reading from books they love. Organisers said they expected an audience of around 10,000 people at what they described as "a glittering celebration of the written word".trishphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17156492240090282246noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27468280.post-69489036686852467172011-02-28T16:26:00.002+00:002011-02-28T16:26:43.640+00:00Dublin Book Festival: 2nd - 6th March

Publishing Ireland is delighted to announce an extended programme at this year’s Dublin Book Festival. Author events will be held from Wednesday, 2nd March – Sunday, 6th March 2011, in a variety of venues throughout Dublin City including the National Library of Ireland, The Gutter Bookshop, Cube at the Project Arts Centre, Dublin City Libraries and, as with previous years, Dublin’s City Hall.

You can DOWNLOAD THE 2011 PROGRAMME here.
This is the 4th Dublin Book Festival bringing together the best of Irish publishing, offering a chance for the voices of both established and up and coming authors to be heard to celebrate Dublin’s designation as a UNESCO City of Literature.

Some of the highlights include the following:

Firstly the Up For Discussion programme has a great mix of topics and speakers, though the Business, Current Affairs, Political Reform and Tomorrow's Women ones all stand out. Secondly, the Be Inspired lunchtime events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday talking real life stories, poetry and fresh voices. Finally there's an evening's entertainment on Saturday 5th at the Project Arts Centre with writing, poetry and comedy performances. It seems to be a bigger and better festival this year, with its own literary pub crawl, lots for children and a line-up of over 60 of Ireland's leading authors, poets and journalists. There are over 50 readings, debates, book launches and workshops and most events are free. A great way to celebrate Irish writing.trishphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17156492240090282246noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27468280.post-57109529938263312152010-11-10T16:13:00.000+00:002010-11-10T16:13:58.016+00:00Calling all Book Clubs

The Ennis Book Club Festival is currently conducting research on adult book clubs nationwide via a book club questionnaire on their festival website.
It has been a while since the last book club and we had decided to read Room by Emma Donoghue in the meantime. Those who read the book enjoyed it especially the use of the five-year-old as narrator. It was not without it flaws and the subject matter was dark but all agreed that the topic was handled well and the novel wasn't as dark as the subject matter would suggest.

Inspired by the Josef Fritzl case, the novel tells the story of Ma and Jack locked in a 11ft by 11ft room and their own private world. To five-year-old-Jack, Room is the world....It's where he was born, it's where he and his Ma eat and sleep and play and learn. Room is home to Jack, but to Ma, it's the prison where she's been held since she was nineteen-for seven long years. Through her fierce love for her son, she has created a life for him but Jack's curiosity is building alongside her own desperation—and she knows that Room cannot contain either indefinitely....Told in the inventive, funny, and poignant voice of Jack, Room is a celebration of resilience-and a powerful story of a mother and son whose love lets them survive the impossible.

Definitely worth a read.
It was shortlisted for the 2005 Booker Prize (an award Ishiguro had previously won in 1989 for The Remains of the Day), for the 2006 Arthur C. Clarke Award and for the 2005 National Book Critics Circle Award. Time magazine named it the best novel of 2005 and included the novel in its TIME 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005. It also received an ALA Alex Award in 2006. It was made into a film directed by Mark Romanek in 2010.
‘A clear frontrunner to be the year’s most extraordinary novel . . . Not since The Remains of the Day has Ishiguro written about wasted lives with such finely gauged forlornness.' Peter Kemp, Sunday Times. In one of the most acclaimed and strange novels of recent years, Kazuo Ishiguro imagines the lives of a group of students growing up in a darkly skewered version of contemporary England. Narrated by Kathy, now 31, Never Let Me Go hauntingly dramatises her attempts to come to terms with her childhood at the seemingly idyllic Hailsham School, and with the fate that has always awaited her and her closest friends in the wider world. A story of love, friendship and memory, Never Let Me Go is charged throughout with a sense of the fragility of life.
The book club will feature a rotating panel of reviewers including Bert Wright who is the administrator of the Irish Book Awards, a celebrity author and a librarian from one of the 369 public libraries in Ireland.

They are trying to establish Bord Gáis Energy Book Club as a great source of information for book clubs in Ireland.

The results of their online survey have just been announced and have found that the Irish are still big readers with nearly three in every four reading six or more books a year. It also found that we Irish like to hoard our books with 72% having at least 50 books on our shelves and 42% of us having more than 100. More than half of us put the book on our shelves when finished reading, only 1% throw it out while more than one third swap with friends and 13% donate to charity. The bed is still the most popular reading place according to 56%, followed by the sitting room with 25% and 18% prefer to read while commuting. Despite the advent of e-readers and iPads, 95% still prefer the paperback. Among the top ten books we would take to a desert island are Life of Pi, Pride and Prejudice, Lord of the Rings, Ulysses, the Bible and How to Survive on a Desert Island. We are nothing if not practical!

Ten years ago, I was a 'stay-at-home' Mum to three small kids and the highlight of my life was a Wednesday-morning jaunt to the local Methodist Church, the venue for a mother and toddler group, the only social outlet for a Cork girl getting used to life in Dublin suburbia.

That is until The Book Club came along -- a decade ago this month.
I was lucky to be asked. The Book Club had been conceived in a housing estate in which I did not live. It comprised a group of girls, all in their early 30s, some working, some not, all married with small children and uniform in their need for something more.

I felt privileged at having being invited but, being an 'outsider', I felt awkward and self-conscious too. I arrived that first evening to a home I had never visited to be greeted by a host I had never met. It was a longing, however, that pushed me over the threshold and a need for decent adult company that got me over any notion of inferiority.

The rules were set down from the get-go. There were to be six of us. The host would cook a meal, with the host-in-waiting -- ie, next one up to hold The Book Club -- doing dessert. The book was not to be discussed until the main course was served, a point at which everyone could then relax and be privy to the conversation.

I thought this was fantastic. Yes, you had the pressure twice a year of hosting the thing but, let's face it, once a month for 10 months of the year you got to dress up, shut the door on the chaos behind, arrive to a tall glass of wine, a dinner that you hadn't had to plan and a company of ladies second to none.

There were more rules.

We were not allowed to talk about the children and no one got to be the boss. Everyone had equal rights to the floor. The date of each book club was of paramount importance and, once agreed, was respected, noted and, most significantly, non-transferable.

The Book Club has been a real team effort, with everyone pitching in to help the host on book club day in the guise of taking over the host's children so that the house could be cleaned and food prepared, thereby ensuring that no child would fall foul of any demented host in the process.

It is this etiquette, structure and format, however, that has been the subject of subtle criticism from our colleagues in the book club world, particularly in respect of our commitment to the serving of a full-blown, sit-down meal. Murmurs from 'outsiders' (see how my inferiority has blossomed to superiority) have cited the inevitability of competition and undue pressure to outdo those that go before you.

Not so. My motto has always been that my going to anybody's home and anybody coming to mine is doing so in the quest of good company, a lively debate and a zone free of children -- a meal is a nice addition but not the motivation. That's how I operate and, for a decade now, I have always assumed the same of the others.

For me, in the early days, The Book Club was like that moment in the morning when I used to work full-time. That time of the day before work takes over and you get to glance at the newspaper and discuss what you heard on 'Morning Ireland' during the commute. I always liked this about the working day. You get to hear everyone else's opinion, opinions you might never be privy to had you not sat in their vicinity.
When I left the workplace to rear my kids I missed this. Very much.

The Book Club gave it back to me. Yes, we choose our books carefully. [Another rule: the book you recommend is always the one discussed on the night of your hosting.]

There are some literary snobs among us and others who are not, but we balance each other out and the end result always makes for interesting discourse and a balanced menu of literature. The discussion about the book is taken very seriously, yet it is the issues thrown up that ensure the night rolls into the early hours.
When we were in our fledgling days, the whole working mother vs stay-at-home mother was a topic that raised its head repeatedly, often leading to roaring matches and bruised egos but an altogether better understanding of both sides of the coin.

We progressed from there and analysed more deeply the characters that inhabited our book choices. Again, this might have reflected the place we were all at in our own lives -- routinely attempting to maintain healthy marital relations on a diet of four hours' sleep a night with exhaustion levels to challenge an Olympic marathon runner.

Though there was great comfort in knowing you were not battling alone, our gathering was not a band of defeatists and I still managed to leave with a little more armour in the guise of cute hints and useful asides to be contemplated, brought home and applied.

Speaking of relations, twice a year, in tribute to our partners, we include the menfolk. Many's the time they facilitate The Book Club, whether it be buying wine, mopping the kitchen floor or presenting their signature dessert, so it's only right they are welcomed into the inner sanctum. This is always a highly charged night. New blood, novel thoughts and an undeniable electric current -- the gender factor.

There can be accusations of us girls being proprietorial, elitist and exclusive, so, in a bid to force us to take ourselves less seriously, they formed their own unit, 'Book Club, Me Arse'. They meet in the local on a monthly basis and run a book on whatever sporting event coincides with their chosen night.

What has been our favourite book? That would never be agreed upon. 'The Life of Pi'? 'The Poisonwood Bible'? 'The Da Vinci Code'? -- that's just a sample of what has been read, embraced, chewed upon and dissected.

Consistently when I read the chosen material, anticipation builds up inside me as I ponder what so-so will think of this. Just when I think I know what will irk some and please others, I am always surprised and never fail to treasure the ensuing exchanges.

Sometimes, I go to The Book Club itching for an argument about a particular book choice or searching for affirmation of a book I have chosen. Invariably, however, I go for the banter and for the friendship six girls gave birth to 10 years ago in an estate in Rathfarnham.

None of the girls lives in that estate any more, and life outside The Book Club has moved on. It has seen us experience many of life's ups and downs but though the knocks have made women of us all, The Book Club remains. It is a warm comfort blanket and is the greatest of equalisers.

At age 10, we are proud of our history, proud of our repertoire of reading material and proud of meeting the challenge of reading books we'd never have read had we not the pressure of presenting our take.
I am no longer dependent on The Book Club for adult company, I am no longer dependent on The Book Club for the escapism I once sought from it and I am no longer dependent on The Book Club to make alternative book choices.

Yet, I am still dependent on The Book Club. The rules have eased and the need to impose them has gone; the team effort to take over the kids has waned as children are entering their teen years, but the commitment to the agreed date and having the book read in time remains central to our ethos.

Why do we stay together when sometimes life on the outside is falling apart?

I can only speak for myself. The Book Club is my very own diamond in the rough; it has many angles and, of course, some flaws but, ultimately, it shines brighter with the years and age and time does not dull its sparkle.
Viva La Book Club, and here's to another 10 years, girls!

The Dublin Writers Festival, now in its 12th year, returns from the1st June to the 6th June for 6 days of literary celebration, featuring over 40 writers who will read from their most recent works and take part in conversations about their writing. This year’s theme centres on “the power of words” and highlights include Atonement writer, Ian McEwan; Star of the Sea author, Joseph O’Connor, and the Irish treasure, Seamus Heaney. And as Emer Costello, the Lord Mayor, says "Our playwrights, poets, fiction and non-fiction writers, as well songwriters and composers will give voice to a living heritage that marks us as the richest of nations".

New initiatives in 2010 include a exploration of song writing with Paul Brady and Neil Hannon in performance and conversation with John Kelly and insights into the art of reading well from Anne Enright and Dermot Healy.
It is set in Trinity College and is about a writing group so here's hoping for an inspirational read.

‘We are a nation that likes nothing better than a good story, preferably featuring one of our own, ideally the parish black sheep, and few could hold a candle to Glynn in that field.’

All Names Have Been Changed is set in Dublin in the mid-1980s - a city in the grip of recession and a heroin epidemic. Narrated by Declan, the only boy of a tight-knit writing group at Trinity College, it tells of their fascination with the formidably talented but troubled writer Glynn, and the darkly exhilarating journey this leads them on.

‘He wanted his art to be a dangerous force, alive. Well then, you might say he got what he asked for.’

Brilliantly exploring the shifting group dynamic, and offering a unique insight into the pursuit of the creative life - with all its energy and demons, its moments of artistic elation and defeat - this is a novel of considerable verve. Following earlier forays into the worlds of art restoration and classical music, it is further evidence of Claire Kilroy’s natural gift for narrative, atmosphere and character.

About the Author
Claire Kilroy's debut novel All Summer was described in the Times as 'compelling ... a thriller, a confession and a love story framed by a meditation on the arts', and was awarded the 2004 Rooney Prize for Irish Literature. Her second novel, Tenderwire was published to great acclaim in 2006, and was shortlisted for the 2007 Irish novel of the Year as well as the Kerry Group Irish Fiction Award. Educated at Trinity College, she lives in Dublin.trishphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17156492240090282246noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27468280.post-89292665929747221832010-04-08T10:58:00.000+01:002010-04-08T10:58:14.069+01:00Easter Book Club: Pot Luck

Debs hosted Book Club on Easter Saturday in her new house and we had a lovely afternoon filled with chats and lots of treats [well it tis the season]. Wonders never cease and four out of five of us in attendance had read the book. See Easter miracles do happen! Unfortunately we had a few who couldn't make it, both Shinners, Amers and K sent their apologies. Also we had one new member - welcome to the mad world that is the Full Moon BookClub P.

We all arrived round lunchtime and everyone brought something to the party - Debs had made some lovely salads, Lisa brought pizza, V brought home-made lemonade, P brought lots of chocolate and I had made my white chocolate and raspeberry cheesecake. The theme was potluck. After a nice lunch and some chat, we got down to business and think the majority of us enjoyed the book -The Missing by Jane Casey- but the character of Sarah Finch annoyed some and others felt she wasn't strong enough to be the central character. There were also some dark issues in the book that made some uncomfortable. I think we all agreed the ending wasn't the best but all in all it did hold our interest and we all finished the book and it did get us talking, always the sign of a good bookclub book.

Thanks for hosting Debs in your lovely new home. And I'm sure everyone would agree it was a lovely literary luncheon.trishphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17156492240090282246noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27468280.post-15521858499471289942010-04-01T14:58:00.000+01:002010-04-01T14:58:27.842+01:00Dublin: One City, One Book

The 'Dublin: One City, One Book' choice for April 2010 is The Picture of Dorian Gray by Dubliner Oscar Wilde. John Boyne’s The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas topped the first Eason Book Club poll of best book club reads of the noughties. The poll revealed the popularity of “cross-over” books – popular with both children and adults – for book clubs.

The Eason Book Club, which is powered by Facebook, has already more than 1,500 registered fans who are availing of book advice from Eason’s team of experts, including suggested reads, information on book events and group discussions on many bookish topics from favourite re-reads to judging books by their covers! There will be a monthly discussion on a selected title which has been kick-started with a lively debate on the poll winner The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. The Eason Book Club will feature regular author participation and this month’s discussion includes an introductory synopsis of the book from the author, John Boyne.

Maria Dickenson, Head of Purchasing at Easons said “Book clubs have become a huge phenomenon in the last 10 years with thousands of book-clubs getting together on a monthly or weekly basis around the country. There is an incredible word of mouth network when it comes to book club books, and titles can have a long shelf life as they are passed from reader to reader over the years. Our online forum is designed to offer support to existing book-clubs and also to allow individuals who are perhaps not in a book-club to take part in discussions in their own time.

It was incredibly interesting to see in the results of our first book-club poll, that “cross-over” children-adult titles are making very popular book club reads with John Boyne’s The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas topping the poll. Mark Haddon’s Curious Incident of the Dog, Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief and Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials Bind Up all also feature in the top twenty. Children’s literature has produced some real gems during the noughties and it is great to see that adults are happy to explore the genre.”

The first Eason Book Club poll registered 1700 votes and respondents were asked to choose their top reads of the noughties from a selection of 125 books. The books selected were drawn from national sales data over the last ten years. There was also a strong qualititative element with the Eason team selecting books that they have read and loved in their own book clubs, as well as books that customers have recommended or responded well to. (The full list of the top 50 selected titles can be found below).

The Eason Book Club is also providing a new way for Eason to interact with its customers. “This online forum is facilitating direct dialogue with our customers which we greatly welcome. The feedback we receive from our online members can have a direct influence on our in-store promotions, for example, following our first poll of top books of the noughties, we are now running a 3 for 2 offer on the book-club top 50 of the noughties. The Eason Book Club will allow us to actively listen to our customers views which is essentially changing the way we do business”, Maria Dickenson concluded.
